Mercedes-Benz revealed the first images and specs today of the A-Class concept to be presented at the next Shanghai Motor Show. Boasting a style diametrically opposed to what the German automaker is currently proposing, the diminutive car packs quite a surprising punch.

At first glance, the swooping hood and low profile evoke a sports car. Thankfully, it’s not just a clever illusion, as the concept calls on a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, direct injection, BlueEFFICICENTY mill producing 210 hp and working hand in hand with a dual-clutch transmission dispatching power to the front wheels.

One of the main innovations is a radar-based rear collision warning system that informs the driver of potential risks while preparing the brakes for an emergency manoeuvre.

The cabin is heavily inspired from the aviation world. The furiously red instruments are inspired by the afterburner of a jet engine, while the shifter looks like a reverse thrust control.
